Image of the Windows 8 logo

The Windows brand was in need of an update. The previous logo had a lot going on: colors, waviness, texture. This one’s simple, clean and everyone knows what it is right away.

Microsoft on the redesign:

Paula [Scher, of design firm Pentagram] asked us a simple question, “your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?”

And thus this throwback design was formed.

Hopefully the product is just as good. I loved Windows 7 after swearing off the platform for many years, and I think the direction the company is taking Windows 8 — particularly the “Metro-style” interface — could be really cool.
